Foundation Courses in the UK and Qatar

What is a Foundation course?

If you have finished 12 years of schooling and wish to go to the UK to enrol on an undergraduate degree, you will need to do a recognised foundation programme. This is a one year course that prepares you for studying on a UK bachelor’s degree programme.

You can choose to apply for a place on a foundation course in the UK or you can remain in Qatar/GCC and study at the University Foundation College in Doha, Qatar.  On successful completion of this course in Doha you are guaranteed a place on a degree programme at one of the 16 universities in the UK.  Since it is equivalent to 3 A Levels you will be eligible to apply to many universities in the UK, USA, Australia or in the GCC. For further information see www.universityfoundationcollege.com or www.ncuk.ac.uk.

A foundation course is for students who have done their high school exams, have completed their IGCSEs / AS levels, or an equivalent level of examination but are not qualified to go directly to a UK university. In this way, the foundation course is a link between such qualifications and university entrance. Besides training you to cope with academic study at higher education level in the UK, extra English language tuition will be provided for those that require it and students will learn about the culture and way of life in the UK so that it is easier to adapt on arrival/entry to the university.

Foundation Courses

On Foundation courses you can specialise in a range of subjects such as: Architecture, Business, Accounting; IT; Law; Art; Engineering, E&E; Social Science; Medicine; Science Bio-medical Pharmacy, Pharmacology; Multimedia; Early Childhood Studies and Humanities.

The University Foundation College in Doha, Qatar offers pathways in Business, Humanities, Science and Engineering.

Certain foundation providers in the UK have partnerships with universities and can guarantee progression to that institution if you score high enough grades.

Foundation Course Requirements

A minimum IELTS score ranging from 4.5 to 5 is normally required for students wishing to study a foundation course.  If you have no formal English qualifications, you may need to attend an English language course or college prior to starting your foundation course.
