Magnetic materials are fundamental to the operation of our contemporary technological society and frustrated materials offer new routes to exotic magnetic states. Geometric frustration arises when the crystal structure does not support conventional magnetic spin arrangements. In these cases, the complex interplay between structure, magnetism and electronic behaviour leads to exciting properties in the material. The aim of this project is to be able to predict and control the structural topography in the design of materials with frustrated magnetism. Two studentships will contribute to this research. One will focus on the solid-state synthesis of new materials and their characterisation using a variety of techniques, including diffraction and magnetic measurements. The second will focus on understanding the structure and magnetic behaviour at the local scale, primarily using data collected at central facilities such as Diamond Light Source and ISIS Neutron and Muon Source (UK). The successful candidates will be based in the School of Physical Sciences at the University of Kent's main campus in Canterbury. The successful candidates will be part of the Materials for Energy and Electronics and Physics of Quantum Materials research groups, and work under the supervision of Dr. Donna Arnold and Dr. Silvia Ramos (University of Kent) with co-supervision from Dr. Laura Vera Stimpson (Canterbury Christchurch University). How to apply How to Apply: To apply please go to [https://www.kent.ac.uk/courses/postgraduate/18/chemistry] / or[https://www.kent.ac.uk/courses/postgraduate/212/physics] Contact: For further information or informal enquiries, please contact either Dr Donna Arnold at d.c.arnold@kent.ac.uk or Dr Silvia Ramos at S.Ramos-Perez@kent.ac.uk. |
